The prestigious 5-star hotel L’Arlatan is located in the historic centre of Arles, leaning against one of the ancient walls of the Constantine Spa.

This ancient classical hotel was purchased in 2015 by collector and patron Maja Hoffmann, who intended to renovate it and to offer high-standard hotel services before the opening of her foundation, Luma, designed hand in hand with famous architect Franck Gehry.

The city of Arles was elected first French destination in 2019 by newspaper Le Monde and is renowned for its outstanding Roman heritage, its artists and photographers, as well as for its proximity to the natural landscapes of the Camargue region.

This treasure of design and refinement can be reached within 50 minutes from Marseille Airport, or within 40 minutes from the TGV train station of Avignon.

L’Arlatan hotel was reopened in 2018 after a complete makeover: its 6000 m² now make up a unique contemporary space where colours and shapes meet artistically.

The hotel’s owner entrusted the renovation project to Cuban-American designer Jorge Prado. 15th-century galleries, old-time beams and joists, 17th-century fireplaces, 10-meter-high Roman walls, … All those historic elements are updated and highlighted to give the hotel a unique touch. The floors are also worth a mention: they are covered with two million varnished terra cotta elements over a range of eighteen colours.

The various buildings, whose central part is registered as a Historic Monument, are organized around a beautiful patio, a majestic staircase with laced metal and several lovely lounges.

L’Arlatan counts in total:

  • 35 rooms and suites
  • 1 restaurant
  • 1 bar
  • 1 outdoor swimming pool
  • 1 fitness room
  • 1 library
  • 1 conference room
  • 1 shop
  • 1 babysitting service

From armchairs and tables by Italian and Scandinavian designers to famous artists’ photographs, each room of this gigantic mosaic is unique, and each piece of furniture is a masterpiece.

Even the panels, doors and elevators are art pieces in and of themselves. Either in laser-carved wood or painted according to the colours of the Camargue lagoon, they represent abstract patterns and Japanese-inspired allegories.

L’Arlatan hotel offers connected rooms as well as a private five-bedroom residence, designed especially to host large families.

On the second floor, the Deluxe Bedroom (30 m²), with its view on the Rhone River and its king-size bed, can be connected to the Bedroom Supérieure (26,5 m²) with its Italian double bed. Each space has its own bathroom, which is ideal for couples travelling with several children.

Ornate ceilings, sky blue or golden yellow walls, the Arlatan Suites (65 m²) consist of a bedroom for the parents with a king-size bed and a small bed for a young child, as well as amazing lounge spaces. Last but not least, let’s not forget to mention their private hot tub.

Good news for the young gourmets: kids’ allergen-free meals and high chairs are available at the hotel restaurant.

It is open every day and offers a menu filled with Mediterranean and Provençal food, which changes according to the seasons.

Every Sunday, brunch is organized in the restaurant.

Don’t hesitate to wander around the patio area or near the heated swimming pool to sip on your cocktail and admire the fabulous garden combining local and tropical plants.

You can also check out the starred restaurant La Chassagnette, fifteen kilometres away from the hotel, where they use the fresh products from their own orchard and vegetable garden.

Little Guest Hotels Collection Remedios Travel Designer

Remedios, 41 y.o, history of art and travels lover, Helena’s mother (2 y.o), from the Canary Islands

It’s with unconcealed excitement that I was waiting to head off for a relaxing weekend in Arlesthe pearl of Provence. The town has the wind in its sails as a travel destination, especially since Maja Hoffmann, the swiss philanthropist, chose it as one of the new French artistic capitals.

After 3 years of work and renovation, this historic 15th century palace was full of promises, and I was not disappointed !

A personal chauffeur was waiting for us, my husband and I, at the Marseille airport to take us to our destination, first passing along the Mediterranean coast and then the sunny highway. After around 50 minutes of comfortable driving, we arrived at our charming hotel, in the heart of the ancient city of Arles.

The Arlatan’s lobby is modern and the desk is very light, all in the image of the innovative spirit that fills the space. The welcoming receptionist quickly checked us in before taking us on a tour of the hotel, all while guiding us towards our suite. The history of the building, the design concepts of the space, the works of art hanging on the walls and doors, you immediately feel the passion and want to share it.

This hotel’s design is simply amazing. Even the smallest details are considered so that the guest’s eyes are always looking around. The colors are exceptional, and it’s hard to imagine the time and the precision that was needed to assemble the thousands of ceramic figures on the palace floors.

Jorge Prado‘s work is sublime. With respect for the most historic parts of the building ˗ such as the exposed stone walls ˗, complacency between the Japanese panels and the multicolor mosaics, all together it creates amazing harmony. Special shout out for the beauty of the main staircase and its chandeliers in the shape of light ruffles.

More than just a boutique hotel, it’s a “jewel hotel“, and we almost felt as if we were wandering through a contemporary art museum. The main rooms such as the dining room or the bar area are large, and the hotel is full of sitting areas or more private spaces to chat, read a book, or simply relax. Everything is designed to make you truly feel at ease.

The hotel also has a large patio and a heated pool in the heart of a lovely garden filled with tropical and Mediterranean plants and trees. The fitness room is calm and well equipped.

« More than just a boutique hotel, it’s a “jewel hotel”, and we almost felt as if we were wandering through a contemporary art museum. »

Upon our arrival in our azure blue suite, we found gifts for our child: coloring books and cartoons focusing on Vincent Van Gogh, who, after staying in Arles in 1888, put Provence on the map in art history. Fresh berries were a lovely addition to these little details.

A super comfortable King-size bed, low table and armchairs with a Scandinavian design, the bedroom offers a warm atmosphere. Additionally, the hotel is located in the center of the old city of Arles, in total tranquility where you can sleep peacefully.

Every evening, around 7 P.M, we had the nice surprise of having delicious muffins delivered to the room. In the dining room, we were treated to the know-how of Arlatan’s chef. Green asparagus, mimosa and herb vinaigrette, seafood risotto, the dishes are seasonal and well executed.

The bar is magnificent, and you can taste colorful cocktails created by a talented mixologist.

Arlatan also has a well-stocked library and offers board games for children as well as everything they need to create and build things to their hearts content. A game room designed for younger children will soon be made available as well.

But clearly in the region of Arles, activities are more numerous. The hotel allows its guests to discover the cultural and natural richness of the surrounding area, all while spending an amazing day as a family.

In addition to the superb Van Gogh foundation, we had the pleasure to see the impressive building designed by Franck Gehry for Maja Hoffmann’s foundation, Luma Arles, and who is being finished up. The guide offered us countless options for artistic workshops or other themed workshops organized for children. The city’s cultural ambition is truly enormous.

In just one morning, we were able to explore the famous salt marshes and the wild beauty of the Camargue. Bulls, flamingos, and all sorts of birds, the reserve is incredibly beautiful.

We also visited the famous restaurant La Chassagnette, that keeps its love for local products close to the heart, and keeps a magnificent gourmet garden on its estate, where aromatic plants grow side by side with the best vegetables in the region.

« Attentive staff, state of the art service and amenities, amazing design, you’ll be totally relaxed during your entire stay. »

We loved our weekend in Arles, and we would have loved to stay there a few extra days ! With its roman or typically Provencal architecture, its animated and colorful streets, its gastronomy and its welcoming atmosphere, the city is incredibly exciting. The current patronage and the desire to make Arles an artistic capital has made the city an important stop for anyone traveling to the south of France.

Arlatan is a magical place, an absolute must see over a weekend, or for a longer stay with those you love. Attentive staffstate of the art service and amenitiesamazing design, you’ll be totally relaxed during your entire stay.
