The 4-star Riad Anata boutique hotel is ideally located in the centre of Fes and only a few meters from the heart of the medina.

In the north of Morocco, Fez is a key imperial city. Full of stories and traditions, the medina of the city is also listed as a UNESCO world heritage site.

Once you arrive at the international airport of Fes-Saïss (don’t forget your passport!), it will only take you around 30 minutes to reach the Riad Anata.

Shuttles are arranged between the airport or the train station and the Riad. Secure parking is just 100 metres from the establishment, allowing you to reach your car without having to cross the medina.

The Riad Anata is first of all the story of its owner in the city of Fez. Passionate about travel and eager to share her discoveries, Valerie Janczewski, supported by her team, opens the doors to this city that is so dear to her.

Entirely renovated by acclaimed decorator Audrey Vermeersch, the Riad offers a hybrid style with Andalusian and Moorish influences but a lovely touch of charm, luxury and modernity. A very intimate side emerges from the hotel – it is very easy to feel at home.

Stroll around its various rooms: from the library to the central patio, through the rooftop terrace and the basin, where it is good to stretch your feet on a hot summer day. An intimate lounge invites you to rest with friends or family, to relax in front of the television or to enjoy a good book.

The rooms of the Riad are each decorated in their own style but have as common points high-quality bedding, an air conditioning system and a refined, cosy and contemporary style. For atmosphere, the owner plays on subtle and varied tones. You will have the choice between the White Room (patio level), the Orange Room (on the first floor), the Red Room (balcony), the Green Room (balcony) and the Azur Room.

Children under 4 stay free of charge with their parents.

The main mission of the Riad is to make you feel at home. As soon as you arrive in this new home, you will find the Travel Book of the Riad Anata. More than just a guide to practical information, this notebook will provide you with a multitude of valuable tips as well as the favorite addresses of Valérie and Audrey (the decorator)!

You will also discover the members of the team who will take care of you during your stay:

Sarah will greet you at the front desk with her warm smile; Mina will prepare delicious dishes; Zineb will ensure the cleanliness of your rooms and Saïd, the butler, with 26 years of experience, will pamper you very well and, finally, Iolanda, a Franco-Sicilian, is in charge of the management of the Riad. You can always contact her if you have any questions regarding your stay. Within the team, 4 languages are spoken: French, English, Spanish and Arabic (Moroccan).

For families and/or friends, Riad Anata can be fully privatized – the team is of course at your disposal to customize your stay.

Why not take a trip with the whole family? Dad and Mom in one room and while the little ones sleep with them, the oldest will be certainly delighted to have their own room.

You can also easily rent the Riad with two families, a formula that will surely make the children happy, as they will be able to travel with their buddies/girlfriends.

The formula is obviously variable according to your wishes.

Breakfast, included in the room rate, is served between 8:30 am and 10:00 am. Because the Riad’s team is ready to do anything to pamper you, do not hesitate to ask for a breakfast box to take away on the morning of your departure.

Mina will let you discover the authentic flavours of Moroccan cuisine. Different tasty options are offered: Formula Lunch (150 dirhams – around 13€), the Simple Menu including a main course and dessert (250 dirhams – around 23€) and the Full Menu with starter, main course, dessert (300 dirhams, around 27€).

You can choose your a la carte dishes, rely on Mina’s inspirations or let her know your preferences for a personalized menu.

Children’s menus are also available (for example, the delicious kofta dumplings, a delight for gourmets).

Cooking classes are also offered and delicious pancakes are served to children during the tasting.

When it’s time for an aperitif, let yourself be tempted by the famous Mojito of Saïd or by a delicious glass of organic Moroccan wine.

FOR THE children

From the welcome gift to the shuttle with a child seat, everything is available to make families’ stay at the hotel pleasant. On-site books, games, baby bottle warmer, baby phone, stroller, high chairs, baby bath and cots are available.

Why not put the chef’s hat on yourself? Mina will be delighted to share her recipes and tips with you. Not only will you get many ideas to reproduce at home but, in addition, you can taste your dishes on the terrace of the Riad with a view of the medina. You will start by going to the market in Medina with Mina then, once you’re back at the Riad, on with your aprons! Finally, sit quietly on the terrace and taste the fruit of your work. Children are obviously welcome to learn how to cook as well! From 10 am to 4 pm, on request, (546 dirhams – 50€ per adult).

The Medina is full of family activities, whether it’s just walking around, doing some shopping, eating lunch or enjoying more special activities such as crafts or yoga classes.

Every morning at 9 am, Aditi welcomes you near the Riad Anata for morning yoga classes. Professor Emeritus of Spanish origin, he will be delighted to teach families and younger people the art of yoga and relaxation.

For the most creative, the Craft Draft multidisciplinary art studio, hosted by Hamza, offers great workshops for young and old alike. Drawing, leather or metal work, pottery, there is something for everyone. Hamza is keen to resell and is an outstanding facilitator, as he knows how to explain all the secrets of Moroccan crafts. Young and old will be enchanted by the workshop and will hurry back for more. The studio is located in the medina, a few minutes walk from the Riad.

The Medina is the only library in Fez dedicated exclusively to children! More than 1,000 children go there every month. It is an ideal opportunity to take a family stroll from the Riad to the media to choose the evening story, to read with your family at bedtime. Want to contribute to the library’s development? Suggest that your children donate their old books and toys to the medina’s children and share an extraordinary human moment.

How about a family photoshoot with the theme of 1,001 nights? It is possible in the old riad of the medina. The artist Violeta Caldes transforms the whole family into princes, princesses and sultans. Choose from jewellery and costumes and makeup! The session lasts between 3 and 4 hours and you can leave with all your photos in digital format. Enjoy with your family and leave with great memories.

Close to the airport of Fez (about twenty minutes from the Riad), the equestrian centre Ain Aymer will bring much happiness to horse enthusiasts. Splendid excursions are available to discover the region on the back of exceptional steeds. For beginners, it is possible to learn, with courses available.

While mum sips an iced tea, feet in the water, in the hammock next to the Riad’s basin, baby can splash safely with cute little plastic ducks.

Finally, it is also possible to see a belly dancer at the Riad and try out this dance that is so typical of Morocco, or a henna artist who can create small and large beautiful temporary tattoos.

In your travel guide of the Riad, you will find a suggested excursion panel to be carried out in the region and also in other cities apart from Fez.

Chefchaouen, the Smurfs village! At 4h drive from Fez, the village of Chefchaouen is lost in the middle of nature. Its medina and its narrow streets are quiet and full of craft shops. But what the children will certainly notice is the walls of the houses of the city, mostly dyed blue, a real Smurfs village. At 660 metres above sea level, you will enjoy a view of the slopes of the Tisouka and Megou mountains that rise above the city. The air is of rare purity and calm reigns over this little corner of paradise. Many other excursions are possible from the Riad, as well as longer tours through Marrakech or the desert of Ouarzazate.

Adventures in the Moyen Atlas: the setting is magnificent, with its forests of cedar oaks. But the real reason for bringing the youngest is to see the little monkeys that live in freedom. Very curious, they will come to say hello, especially if you have some peanuts (in winter) or mandarins (in summer) to offer. You will be able to buy their favourite treats on the spot, for only a few dirhams.

The Domaine de la Pommeraie: at 25 kilometres from Fez, the Pommeraie farm focuses on the production of goat cheese on a human and local scale. Fresh and carefully prepared products await you on site. You will be able to learn more about cheese making while taking the time to go and say hello to the goats and other animals of the farm.

What could be better than a hammam getaway to get into the local tradition and enjoy a romantic moment? The Naussika Spa is located just outside the Medina, in the New Town. You will have to take one of the traditional red taxis from the city to get there. Once your hammam is finished (pay attention to Mom and Dad, this is a traditional hammam!) you can take the time to eat in the New Town. A good address? Adil, a small « street food » restaurant, an expats’ place, which makes succulent grills.

The Faraj Palace is a few minutes walk from the Medina.

Another relaxing idea, 20 kilometres north-west of Fez is the most famous spa resort in Morocco, Moulay Yacoub.

Just a 10-minute drive from the Riad, golfers can practice their swing on the 18-hole Oued Fès golf course. The green fee is 600dhs per person (around 54€) for 18 holes and 400dhs per person (around 37€) for 9 holes. This rate includes an unlimited driving range and a trolley if necessary.

There’s no doubt, the Riad Anata is the intimate address par excellence to travel to Fez with your family!

What makes Riad Anata a family address?

Initially, I designed the Riad as a single family friendly home where I would want to come to relax with family or friends. Later, when I built the place to make a real guest house, I decided to keep this family, intimate atmosphere. Today, the Riad offers 5 beautiful rooms, the staff is warm and always caring, with hospitality and Moroccan culture palpable in every living space of the Riad.

Beyond the welcome that is reserved for families, the Riad is perfectly equipped to meet the needs of the little ones. We provide parents with a stroller but also a car seat, a high chair, a bath, a bottle warmer or a baby-phone. Children are kings in Morocco and Riad Anata is naturally aligned with this tradition. For example, children enjoy a special 3-course menu at the restaurant. We back away from nothing to satisfy our little guests!

Children who stay at the Riad develop their little habits…They can play freely with our games and books and then join their parents who relax in the atrium or rooftop terrace. Generally, it is up there that families enjoy the sweet evenings of Fez after visiting the Medina and the other attractions of the region during the day. They play a board game, discuss or revise the next day’s activity programme together.

By the way, what activities do you recommend for families?

The city of Fez is in the image of Morocco as a fundamentally family destination. The Medina alone brings together a multitude of experiences to share with the family. No need to go far away because just 10 minutes from Riad Anata, families can stroll in Jnan Sbil Park and swim in Riad Alkantara’s superb outdoor swimming pool.

A little further, children and their parents are invited to discover traditional Moroccan crafts alongside Hamza, to participate in a private session of yoga lavished by Simedhi or to use medicinal herbs in the Atlas workshop. There is also an apothecary, where they can prepare together some natural remedies against the nasty viruses of winter.

Another activity that is very popular with all members of the family is the excursion that takes them to the city of Azrou. Its Cedar Gouraud forest is home to colonies of Magots monkeys, accustomed to human contact and the visit of curious tourists. For a few dirhams, children can feed them mandarins in summer or peanuts in winter.

All our excursions are listed and detailed in our travel diary, available at the reception.

How can children participate to your cooking classes?

Our cooking classes are a huge hit with families! The little ones are delighted to get their hands dirty. From the beginning of the activity, they walk, alongside their parents and our chef Samira, through the stalls of the souks of the Medina in search of the ingredients necessary for the menu of the day. The most popular recipes are traditional corn soup and chicken tajine and vegetables. Back to the Riad, young and old roll up their sleeves and put on their aprons. Once the preparation is cooked and served under the watchful eye and precious advice of Samira, the family gather around the table for tasting. The activity lasts about 4 hours (from 10h to 14h) and costs 50€ / adult, 25€/child alone and 20€/child accompanied by his parents.

Do you have a family-friendly anecdote to share with us?

In June 2012, just a few weeks after the official opening of the Riad, we received a Spanish family who wanted to experience the ultimate Moroccan experience. After talking with Muriel and her two children, Felix (9 years old) and Violetta (14 years old), Simohamed, the manager of the Riad, simply invited the Madrilenian tribe to share a delicious dinner in his own family home. During the meal, Violetta befriended Simohamed’s younger sister, so today, the two girls are still in contact! This wonderful experience clearly set the tone for what we wanted to offer in terms of services to our customers.
