DAY 1: ARRIVAL AT CAPE TOWN
Arrival at Cape Town International Airport
Receive your rental car and head to the More Quarters Hotel (30′) to check in and meet your local French contact who will give you your travel documents.
Suggested Activity: Discovering Cape Town by hop-on hop-off bus
After cooling off at the hotel, head to the Waterfront for lunch overlooking the marina with its great atmosphere. This is where you will find the famous Hop-On Hop-Off bus, the ideal activity to discover the splendours and diversity of the city for the first time while relaxing after your flight. Sitting on the double-deck, children enjoy the scenery, protected by a hat and a full screen adapted to their sensitive skin. For lunch, we advise you to browse the stalls of the market covered V&A Food Market. No doubt everyone will find what they want.
Accommodation: More Quarters (breakfast included)
Kids are kings at More Quarters! Colouring books, sweets, cosmetics, games for the bath, high chairs or children’s menus in the restaurant, every detail counts to satisfy your little blond heads! Spacious and practical, the rooms allow your toddlers to wander as they please between the living room and the small kitchen, where favorite compotines are to be found in the fridge.
DAY 2: DISCOVER THE CAPE TOWN FLORA
Suggested activity: Table Mountain
Departure in the early hours of the morning towards Table Mountain to avoid the queue of the cable car and the hot hours in altitude. At the top, make your child climb on your shoulders because if a cloud came to pass, you can touch them with the tips of your fingers!
Suggested activity: Kirstenbosch Botanical Park
In the afternoon programme: a family walk in the extraordinary Kirstenbosch Botanical Park. Imagine a lush environment, a suspension bridge, a breathtaking view and the laughter of your children mingling with the singing of hummingbirds … Do not miss a small game of hide and seek around the almond tree that is more than 200 years old! Remember to bring with you some snacks to enjoy together in the shade of pine trees, lying on large lawns.
Accommodation: More Quarters (breakfast included)
DAY 3: FAUNA AND THE END OF THE WORLD
Suggested activity: The Cape of Good Hope
For this day at the Cape of Good Hope, we advise you to take the road by the Southern Suburbs, direction Muizenberg. After an hour’s drive, plan a first stop in Boulders to see its famous African penguin colony. Once at the Cape of Good Hope Reserve (30′ drive), capture a family portrait in front of the Cape of Good Hope sign and then start your climb (on foot or by cable car) to the lighthouse for a view on two oceans, and, right in front of you… Antarctica!
Suggested activity: Ostrich farm
After taking a few glances at the end of the world, organize a visit to the Ostrich farm, located at the exit of the reserve (5′ journey). Your toddlers will enjoy talking with this funny bird and his little ones.
Suggested activity: Hout Bay harbor and sea lions
Then take the mythical Chapman’s Peak that will take you to the port of Hout Bay (60′ ride) where hordes of sea lions have settled. Enjoy your visit to Hout Bay for dinner at Dunes, a sea-view restaurant with a private playground for your toddlers.
Accommodation: More Quarters (breakfast included)
DAY 4: MEETING WITH A CHEETAH AND LODGE
Suggested activity: Cheetah Outreach
After a good breakfast at the More Quarters, take the road to Elgin Valley (1 hour ride).
Halfway, visit Cheetah Outreach Sommerset West, an NGO that collects cheetahs that can not be rehabilitated in their natural environment. Passionate about South African wildlife, the volunteers of the association will accompany your family during an unforgettable encounter with these sublime creatures! Take a picture alongside the felines who love cuddles.
Accommodation: Oldmac Daddy (breakfast included)
In the late morning, you arrive at the lodge Oldmac Daddy, an exceptional family establishment that promises you a unique stay with its original accommodation and its many activities and facilities: spa, swimming pool, lagoon, beach, playground, tractors, hives etc. In the afternoon, Mom and Dad can leave baby with the excellent babysitting service for a few hours to visit the surrounding vineyards.
DAY 5: CETONES AND HERMANUS TOUR
Suggested activity: Meet with the whales
Between the months of June and December, whales make a noticeable passage in the bay of the coastal town of Hermanus (1 hour ride). This is where cetacean mothers meet to give birth to their young. The region has counted more than 1,700 whales in the area for the 2018 season! If your tour is organized between the months of January and May, we will gladly offer you an alternative activity.
Returning from your deep-sea cruise, enjoy the Hermanus iodine air from its promenade and lively alleyways, where you’ll find plenty of dining options for dinner time. We then return to enjoy the facilities of the lodge by the road to the vineyards of the Elgin Valley (1h30 drive).
Accommodation: Oldmac Daddy (breakfast included)
DAY 6: DEPARTURE FOR LARGE RESERVES
The great Madikwe reserve
After a good breakfast, head for Cape Town International Airport (1 hour ride) where you will be waiting for your flight to Johannesburg (2 hours flight). You receive your new rental car and immediately take the road to the sublime reserve of Madikwe (4 hours). If you want to organize an internal flight between Johannesburg and Madikwe to avoid this step by car, you will find all the details in the budget below. Madikwe has three significant benefits for families. Not only is the reserve closer to the Kruger Reserves, but it is a non-malaria area and much more exclusive than the reserves near Johannesburg.
Accommodation: Lelapa Lodge – Madikwe (full board + local drinks + safaris)
Built by family safari owners and family travelers, this property has been specially designed to accommodate mini rangers. A program of eco-educational activities is dedicated to them throughout their stay. Nothing surprising when you know that “family” is the English translation of “lelapa”… The lodge has a total of 12 suites (100 sqm) intimate and comfortable eco-friendly facilities and decorations. Large families stay in a family suite with a second bedroom.
DAY 7 AND 8: SAFARIS
Safaris
Safaris at sunrise and sunset and rest of the mini rangers and their parents at the lodge between the two safaris.
Accommodation: Lelapa Lodge – Madikwe (full board + local drinks + safaris)
DAY 9: SAFARI AND DEPARTURE
Safaris
Last safari at sunrise.
Departure
Return to Johannesburg (4 hours trip)
