Surrounded by ancient holm oaks, olive groves and vineyards, the 5-star hotel São Lourenço do Barrocal is located in a bucolic setting: the Portuguese countryside of the Alentejo region.

Upon request and at additional cost, you can benefit from a shuttle service to and from Lisbon airport (2h) and Évora railway station (45′).

The São Lourenço do Barrocal stands out among Portugal’s unique natural heritage. The cottages in particular, can be described as a small country house, completely private and totally suitable for family holidays. Under its modern and uncluttered farmhouse look, , reminiscent of local agricultural architecture, the estate plants its decorations between wildflowers, bushy perennial grasses and scattered colours. You can observe butterflies flirting with the petals and birds dancing in the midst of soothing nature.

José António Uva, the worthy representative of the eighth generation of the same family to have lived in São Lourenço do Barrocal, is responsible for the aesthetics and splendour of the place to this day. Who better than a little boy who grew up and spent his childhood in this place to give you an authentic and unforgettable experience?

Here, an extra bed can be added in the room for a child from 5 to 12 years old, for an extra charge of €80/night.

Served between 7:30 and 11:00 a.m., the homemade breakfast is offered to you by the house! Fresh bread, local products, organic ingredients of local origin, here is what will sign the beginning of your busy days!

The Alentejo region is famous for its fresh, simple, full of flavour cuisine. This is showcased at the São Lourenço Do Barrocal Restaurant where the culinary brigade executes delicious recipes based on seasonal products picked from the hotel’s vegetable garden or purchased from local producers. On its terraces overlooking the gardens, you can enjoy, for example, a “grouper fried with olive oil, garlic and coriander”, or a “shrimp stir-fry on a bed of garden salad”.

For their spring and summer dinners, families like to sit down at the Hortelão Restaurant, located by the pool and the vegetable garden, to enjoy grilled vegetables with certified organic veal or fish caught in the Alqueva Lake, about 10 km from the hotel.

And to accompany these divine dishes, the house will surely serve you one of the wines produced and grown at the hotel’s winery. Cultivated on a unique terroir, São Lourenço do Barrocal’s 10-year-old vines are a dream come true. To sample this little pleasure, you can take part in a wine tasting while admiring the view of the landscape. With a glass in your hand, your gaze on the foothills of Monsaraz…

The most romantic will not be able to resist grabbing their wicker basket filled with local produce and sitting in the shade of cork oak in the garden of almost 700 hectares. Lulled by the soft breeze, enjoy light, regional dishes prepared to order for a successful family picnic.

For children

The São Lourenço do Barrocal is definitely family-oriented and kid-friendly. In order to receive its little guests in the best possible way, the management and staff of the premises are always ready to help.

The children travel back to prehistoric times thanks to creative themed workshops. The little artists paint using natural products found on the estate. Both playful and fun, these sessions reconnect toddlers to the simple things of life. A few feathers for painting, a few minerals and plants for colour, and here is your childlike but unique work of art.

The domain’s pastry chef also runs workshops where toddlers can learn how to bake and make delicious cookies to enjoy with friends.

In this highly megalithic landscape, children also take part in tournaments of prehistoric hunting tools, pottery workshops, or even cooking classes to learn how to make a simple but delicious salad with dried fruit, honey, fresh fruit and lettuce from the garden.

In the heart of the hotel, the games room is a delight for the little blond heads. In this enchanting universe, little ones simply love to laugh out loud, create stories, learn the secrets of regional cuisine, play board games, read books, and much more!

Upon request, and at extra charge, it is possible to organize fun activities for toddlers! Speaking of which, it is indeed in this dream hotel that a great treasure hunt takes place! The aim of the game: to discover the trunk full of surprises thanks to the map that will guide the children’s little steps… Fun guaranteed!

For a dose of refreshment, children will love to throw themselves into the pool which is totally dedicated to them! This pool is in fact bordered by a family-friendly area.

Family experiences

The rural and bucolic setting of the Portuguese countryside is ideal for family outings. The hotel has selected for you the most resourcing activities for an instant connection with nature. NB: some of these activities are not free of charge, please ask your Little Guest Travel Designer for further information.

Budding astronomers will deepen their knowledge of astronomy in the Alqueva Dark Sky Reserve. Protected from pollution, this area lets you observe the stars without being held back. Did you know that? According to Greek mythology, the Little Dipper and the Big Dipper are in fact Arcas and his mother Callisto, a nymph with whom Zeus fell in love. Mad with jealousy, Hera would have changed them into a constellation!

The São Lourenço do Barrocal also offers family sailing on Lake Alqueva for sport fishing trips that will thrill young and old alike.

Ornithologist in your spare time? The Alentejo region is full of Northern Europe and North Africa birds such as the crane, bustard, black-capped blue magpie, elegant goldfinch, and hoopoe. Embark on a 3-hour mini safari with an expert guide from Portugal Birds&Trails and discover the beauty of the world around us.

You can also enjoy an ethnobotanical walk in the footsteps of the unique local flora. Medicinal, aromatic or edible plants, get out your little notebooks to take note of your discoveries. On this 7-kilometre-long trail, you’ll come across butterfly orchids and gum rockrose, among others…

Still with the aim of discovering more about the region, you can follow an archaeological visit to discover a surprising megalithic heritage. Manuel Calado, one of Portugal’s greatest archaeologists, will be in charge of showing you this prehistoric heritage.

After all these extraordinary activities, take off in a hot-air balloon and fly over the landscapes of Monsaraz. With your lynx’s eye, you’ll be able to see the flowered paths and the bird’s spot that you would have previously walked and observed. From 6 years old, children (from 1m20 minimum) are welcome aboard for this unforgettable experience!

The more adventurous will enjoy a ride on a mountain bike, on horseback, or simply on foot, between lakes and rolling hills.

Either way, you will blossom like a sunflower in the sun with all these activities, and we haven’t told you everything! Sailing on the tranquil waters of Lake Alqueva, discovering the preparation of olive oil, participating in a pottery workshop…are so many outings and activities that will make your stay an Eldorado.

For parents

Relaxation and recreation are the watchwords at the São Lourenço do Barrocal Spa. Thanks to a wide range of treatments by Susanne Kaufmann and prodigious hands, massages and treatments will plunge you into a world of well-being. Tension and stress will become distant memories and give way to calm and balance. Enter the hydrotherapy room equipped with a cedar wood whirlpool bath and let the warmth flow through you to enjoy a moment of unparalleled relaxation. Adults also have their own pool: set away from the children’s pool and entirely reserved for adults, this 4-metre granite pool promises you a refreshing break.

Once relaxed and rested, guide your steps to the winery and enjoy the scent of the grapes as you weave your way through the alleys. While tasting these local wines, you will learn more about the history of the estate, as well as its winemaking techniques.

Do you have a penchant for spirits? A qualified barman will reveal the secrets of mixology. Create incredible cocktails from the fruits and vegetables of the hotel’s organic vegetable garden. A Red Mary with watermelon, a Barrocal with peas, a Reguila with grapes… shake, shake, drink!

Authentic charm and rural luxury

Jérôme, father of Achille, 5 years old, from Brussels

Last August, I had the chance to stay at Sao Lourenço do Barrocal, a sublime rural hotel located 1h20 from Lisbon. I’ll share my impressions with you in the following testimony.

At Little Guest, we visit each hotel that is part of our collection to make sure that they all meet our quality standards and that the families who book a stay with us will have an unforgettable holiday. I usually stay at these establishments with my wife and son, but this time I travelled alone.

I met many families in Sao Lourenço do Barrocal. It must be said that the place is particularly kids-friendly. It probably has something to do with the fact that this farm has been owed by the same family for more than 200 years.

This old farm has been brilliantly turned into a charming hotel. The owners have done a fantastic job of restoration: the old and the modern blend perfectly. The place has lost none of its authenticity. On the contrary, the peasant past is sublimated here. The walls are decorated with black and white photos displaying old scenes of agricultural life. The estate still produces its own wine and also grows the fruits and vegetables that are served in the hotel’s two restaurants. Jams, honey, bread and many other authentic products are also prepared here.

On the small road that led me to the hotel, I was greeted by a herd of cows. I stopped the car and contemplated this unrealistic spectacle.

The establishment offers two types of accommodation: hotel rooms and houses. These houses feature one, two or three bedrooms and are therefore perfect for families.

“If you’re looking for secret addresses and big resorts turn you off, Sao Lourenço do Barrocal is made just for you.”

I stayed in a hotel room so big (about 50 sqm) that it can easily accommodate a couple with a child. My room had its own terrace. When I arrived, a bottle of white wine from the local cuvée was waiting for me in my room. A very nice attention! My bathroom had a shower and a separate bathtub. Perfect for bathing baby! The linen, the taps, the wooden furniture, the brick tiles, the details of the decoration… everything in this room exuded authenticity.

Luxury is not ostentatious at Sao Lourenço do Barrocal. Luxury here is tasting the fish of the day grilled on the barbecue, savouring the figs from the orchard for breakfast or riding a mountain bike through the vineyards that border the estate.

If you’re looking for secret addresses and big resorts turn you off, Sao Lourenço do Barrocal is made just for you.

I see travel as a great opportunity to discover new horizons, to learn and to grow intellectually. I modestly try to teach my son these values.

The hotel fits perfectly into this approach. Archaeology activities are organized to discover the dolmens on the estate. If your children are keen on archaeology, take them to visit the city of Evora, 20 minutes away from the hotel and listed as UNESCO heritage sites.

Children will also love feeding the donkeys and horses that roam peacefully around the park.

A shallow swimming pool has been specially created for babies. Older children can have fun in the main pool, whose depth starts at 50 cm.

The kids-club is very beautiful and has been set up in an old outbuilding with a small central courtyard. The place is so beautiful that you don’t feel guilty for a second about entrusting your children there!

“The kids-club is very beautiful and has been set up in an old outbuilding with a small central courtyard.”

In the evening, the housekeeper prepares your room for the night and takes care to place homemade cookies in a small glass jar covered with gingham fabric. So cute!

The hotel offers a picnic basket delivery service if you want to eat on the terrace of your hotel room or in your villa. Each dish is prepared using the best local ingredients. Such a nice formula to share with your family! You can also enjoy your picnic in the shade of a hundred-year-old olive tree or under one of the many oak trees that decorate the estate.

During your stay, don’t miss the Spa set up by Susanne Kaufmann and awarded by famous magazine Monocle. The spa is housed in an old building with vaulted ceilings. The place is magical.

Finally, before your return, stop by the Farm Shop to bring back the best local products and share a piece of your wonderful experience with your friends…
