The Shangri-La Villingili Resort & Spa is a 1.5-hour flight from Malé International Airport, in the southern-most part of the Maldives, in the Addu Atoll on the island of Villingili.
From Malé, you will board a small private plane that will take you on the island of Gan. Then, just 5 minutes by boat are enough to reach the establishment. Arrival at the hotel is like a dream: a paradise island surrounded by a coral reef and white sandy beaches is offered to you.
Shangri-La Villingili is made up of a series of luxurious private villas with thatched roofs, some perched above the turquoise waters where a fascinating marine ecosystem is to be discovered.
The island is long and looks a bit like a small spoon seen from the plane – it is 3km long and 800m wide. What is striking at first sight is the luxuriant emerald vegetation composed of coconut trees, palm trees and banana trees, some of which are more than 200 years old.
For a small anecdote, the island shelters the highest point of the Maldives, a place of an altitude of 5,1m. It is the world’s smallest national highlight. Do not forget to plant your flag when you have climbed it!
The Shangri-La Villingili is an oasis of happiness, the ideal place to be cut off from the rest of the world, to recharge and contemplate the fauna and flora. The hotel is especially suitable for families who want to meet and experience extraordinary adventures.
In total, the complex comprises 132 villas of 9 different styles. From villas with private pools, houses perched in tropical trees, through the presidential villas, everyone can find the place where it feels best.
Standard amenities in each villa include free high-speed wireless internet access, 24-hour room service, safe, IDD telephone, 40-inch LCD TV, Bose DVD player, an iPod docking station, a Nespresso machine and a traditional mini bar.
Let’s now go to the various villas that dot the island.
First there are the Pool Villas, which offer a total area of 133 sqm (1431 sqft) (79 sqm – 850 sqft inside and 55 sqm – 592 sqft outside). They can accommodate up to 4 people. They are equipped with a private swimming pool, a terrace and an outdoor shower. These villas are surrounded by lush forest and are the promise of a total change of scenery with ocean views. The decoration is a combination of Asia, the Middle East and India.
The Deluxe Pool Villas offer an area of 189 sqm (2034 sqft) (93 sqm – 1001 sqft inside and 96 sqm – 1033 sqft -outside), more than double the size of a classic Pool Villa. Up to 4 people can stay. The facilities are the same as in a classic pool villa, also with a separate bedroom and arge living room. The bedroom and bathroom overlook the sea. Enjoy the outdoor patio to eat under the stars, facing the ocean. Privacy guaranteed. You are alone in the world.
The Beach Villas are quite similar to the Deluxe Pool Villas, with the same indoor and outdoor area, are set on a white sandy beach and offer a private haven. Again, up to 4 people can stay.
Note that you can also book a Two Bedroom Beach Villa and so enjoy a total area of 224 sqm (2411 sqft) (118 sqm – 1270 sqft inside and 106 sqm – 1140 sqft – outside). It is the ideal choice for families or traveling companions who want privacy and proximity during their stay. Each has its own villa and the two buildings share a large patio, a terrace and an infinity pool. Up to 6 people can occupy a Two Bedroom Beach Villa.
Let’s get closer to the ocean and its soothing sounds with the Water Villas. These villas have a total area of 166 sqm (1786 sqft) (94 sqm – 1011 sqft inside and 72 sqm – 775 sqft – outside). Enjoy the subtle breeze from the far horizon, where the azure waters encounter a sapphire sky. The Water Villas are built on stilts. They are grouped on a large wooden structure overlooking the ocean. Please note that the hotel does not recommend this villa to families with children under 12, as the terrace gives direct access to the sea. A maximum of 4 people can be accommodated in a Water Villa.
Back in the forest with the Ocean View Villas, perched on wooden stilts between the tops of tropical trees with exquisite views of the ocean. At this height, needless to say, privacy is guaranteed! The total area is 218 sqm (2346 sqft) (87 sqm – 936 sqft – inside and 131 sqm – 1410 sqft – outside). For obvious security reasons, the hotel does not recommend these villas to children under 12 years of age. The facilities are the same as for the other villas. If the prospect of living at height in a paradise-like environment makes you dream, then this villa is made for you, provided that you are maximum of 4 people.
We finish this tour of the villas of the island with the two jewels of Villingili: Muthee and Laalu, the two presidential villas. The Villa Muthee has a generous surface of 570 sqm (6135 sqft) (275 sqm – 2960 sqft – inside and 295 sqm – 315 sqft – outside). The Villa Laalu, with its 957 sqm (10301 sqft) (472 sqm – 5080 sqft – inside and 485 sqm – 5220 sqft – outside) is the largest and most prestigious villa on the island.
Villa Muthee is a real pearl (Muthee means “Pearl” in Dhivegui, the local language), a sanctuary that stands proudly in the forest, at the finest of both ends of the island. It consists of a luxurious room, a spectacular bathroom with a view of the ocean, a private spa pavilion and a covered pavilion directly on the water with terrace and deckchairs. Villa Muthee can accommodate 4 people.
Villa Laalu, a rough diamond of nearly 1,000 sqm (10763sqft), with two large bedrooms with high ceilings, is located in the centre of the island. The villa is decorated with carefully selected works of art: Asian collectors, sculptures and urns from Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Thailand. The villa is equipped with a luxurious bathtub for two people, a separate living and dining room, and an incredible view of the ocean. It can accommodate up to 6 people: 1 adult and 5 children, 2 adults and 4 children, 3 adults and 3 children, 4 adults and 2 children, 5 adults and 1 child or 6 adults.
