Being between Hyde Park and Buckingham Palace, in the heart of London’s Knightsbridge district, is erected a monument to the British hotel industry: The Lanesborough *****.

This establishment, which has been erected since 1719, and which was renovated in 1825 by William Wilkins – famous for having designed the National Gallery – had remained a luxury private residence until the 1980s, at a time when the whole area became the most exclusive residential and commercial district in the British capital.

To embellish this exceptional location, while respecting the original classic proportions, world-class architects and artisans, in partnership with the best historic preservation organisations, embarked on a three-year restoration and redevelopment project according to the most sophisticated and authentic lines that exist.

The result? One of the most beautiful palaces in the world, and the very best in terms of British-style comfort and hospitality.

One of the most comfortable ways to get to this extraordinary place is certainly by benefiting from a private limousine transfer from the Heathrow Airport, about 20 kilometres away, or from London Victoria Station, which is less than a kilometre away.

Entering the Lanesborough is experiencing a moment of marvelling that will certainly remain engraved in your memory as a traveller. Monumental lobby, rosettes, shimmering frescoes, works of art, period furniture, common areas and rooms covered with 23 ¼ carat gold leaf, the attention to detail and the luxury of the locale are astounding.

For example, this hotel is the sole hotel in London to offer a 24-hour butler service for all room categories. Its Michelin-starred Celeste restaurant is particularly popular and has a delicious Library Bar and one of London’s best cigar and cognac lounges. As an icing on the cake, its Spa – which won Lanesborough the title of “Best Hotel Spa 2019” at the World Spa Awards – is without doubt one of the finest in the country.

The hotel makes available for you:

  • 2 restaurants
  • 2 bars
  • 1 exceptional Spa
  • 1 indoor swimming pool
  • 1 fitness room
  • 1 world class babysitting service

If you are seeking after sensational comfort and décors of aristocratic sophistication, then Lanesborough is the hotel for you. The rooms and suites of this establishment perfectly and magically blend the charms of tradition and the advantages of modernity. Hand-painted trompe l’oeil, warm materials, delicate furniture, as well as the latest home and digital technologies will make your stay a very delightful one.

Being richly furnished with a sofa and an armchair, the Junior Suite (45 sqm) has a seating area, a large bathroom with an Italian shower and a separate bathtub, as well as large windows that flood the room with natural light. Although this option is ideal for couples with a young child, connecting rooms are also available on request.

The Apsley Suites derive their name from the magnificent London residence of the first Duke of Wellington, which can be impressively viewed from the suites. Each suite has an area of up to 52sqm and has an entrance hall, a large bedroom and an elegant separate living area. Large families can also access a connecting room.

You have certainly had the opportunity to behold the sumptuous décor of the Royal Suite: it served as a backdrop for Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman in the film “Eyes Wide Shut“, by Stanley Kubrick. This 450 sqm residence is worthy of a prince or a head of state: its seven bedrooms and bathrooms, its two living rooms, its dining room overlooking the gardens of Buckingham Palace, its private kitchen, as well as a permanent butler service makes it a timeless place. For large families and groups up to 18 persons!

The Lanesborough invites you to rare moments of delight in its main restaurant: Céleste, with one Michelin star. In its incredible dining room, under the domed glass roof, the Portuguese chef, Darcio Henriques will concoct dishes highlighting the creativity of contemporary European cuisine, while respecting the codes of British tradition.

These are specially highlighted in this majestic setting during the inevitable “Afternoon Tea“, prepared with delicacy and offered daily by the house’s pastry chefs.

True to its high standards and its exceptional service, the hotel offers its privileged guests the opportunity of being served in their rooms, 24 hours a day, by a butler that is very attentive to their every need.

The Library Bar is one of London’s most famous cocktail bars, with a breath-taking collection of liquors – including 18th century cognacs – and world-class mixologists, who will entreat you with their spectacular blends. To highlight these great bottles in the most beautiful way possible, cigar lovers are invited to sit comfortably on the heated outdoor terrace, holding a freshly selected Havana Cigar, in the cellar of the Garden Room.

The Lanesborough Club & Spa has its own restaurant, which offers snacks, protein-rich smoothies and juices, all day long. Groups of 8 to 10 people have a semi-private dining room, where they can enjoy their healthy little dishes after workouts.

To get enveloped in the excellence of this locale, the children can take real mixology lessons with professionals, making delicious mocktails in the Library Bar to later enjoy them with their families.

From June to September, you can even dive in the Serpentine Lido, a huge body of water, which even has a pool for young children.

You can also head to Kensington for a free family visit to the Museum of Natural History, a veritable institution that houses one of the world’s most impressive life science collections. London Calling

Jérôme, 36, Father to 5-year-old Achille, from Brussels.

Last February, I went to London to resolve some business matters. With my wife not having returned to the English capital for several years and my son being THE biggest fan of the film Paddington, I invited them to accompany me. Together we had a perfect stay at Lanesborough.

A hotel-museum

As soon as we walked through the gates of Lanesborough, we got the feeling of reliving a piece of the UK’s history. The décor, the friendliness of the staff and the beauty of the place immersed us in a timeless world. we felt like we might run into Winston Churchill sipping some cognac at the bar. The period furniture and the numerous works of art that adorn every corner of the hotel help in creating a cosy and refined atmosphere.

Amidst this sumptuous decor sits Lilibet, the Persian cat whose name was directly inspired by the nickname of Elisabeth II, Queen of England. The feline has the gift of enchanting children and making the hotel’s guests smile.

« Our son Achille received a pretty plush toy placed on the children’s bed which had been setup for him in the living room of the suite »

We had chosen to lodge in a Junior Suite, and the hotel kindly upgraded us to an Executive Suite. A butler greeted us in our room and told us that Lanesborough is the only hotel in London to offer butler service in each room category. A small button located in the hallway of the room allows one to call on the butler day and night, in order to satisfy every wish. We didn’t overuse this offer; however, we still asked our butler to unpack our luggage and arrange our clothes away in the dressing room. How comfortable life looks here! Free daily laundry service of three cloths per person is also included. A detail that matters a lot when traveling with a child.

As a welcome gift, our son Achille received a pretty plush toy placed on the children’s bed which had been setup for him in the living room of the suite. A bathrobe and slippers in his size had equally been made available for him.

A little detail that helps to feed the imagination of children: our son’s duvet was decorated with small drawings symbolizing London such as double-decker buses and the famous red telephone boxes.

Exceptional location

Lanesborough is located just opposite Hyde Park, next to Buckingham Palace and a stone’s throw from Mayfair.

On Sunday, we took a long 30-minute walk through Hyde Park to reach the gigantic playground built in memory of Princess Lady Di and her fight for underprivileged children. Blue sky, rays of sunshine: the weather was perfect. Hyde Parc offers great activities such as a pedal boats or pony rides. We ended our Sunday trip by sharing a delicious snack at a coffee shop in Notting Hill. It was perfect!

The next day, we visited the surrounding areas of Buckingham Palace. Our son was able to admire the changing of the guard and he was very impressed to learn that the King and Queen of England live in this great castle.

On Monday, while I was working, my wife and my son went on a little shopping spree. Under the guidance of the Lanesborough concierge, they headed to the Lego Store in Leicester Square (a 5-minute drive or 25-minute walk from the hotel), then to the famous Hamleys toy store on Regent Street.

« Lanesborough has this crazy class that is shared by a small handful of palaces around the world »

In the evening, we met at the hotel’s swimming pool to share a moment of relaxation and tell one another about our respective day. The swimming pool is only accessible to children at certain times (1 hour per day during the week and 1 hour 30 minutes per day during weekend). However, if your child is smart and there are not many people at the pool, the spa manager will make an exception 🙂

Ultimate refinement

Lanesborough has this crazy class that is shared by a small handful of palaces around the world. The locker rooms of the sports hall alone attest to this extraordinary refinement. I travel a lot, on average three times a month and most of the time I get the chance to lodge in very beautiful establishments, however, I must confess that I have rarely seen such attention to detail.

Every morning, for example, we had our breakfasts in the hall of the Michelin-starred restaurant “Céleste”. The carpet, antique furniture, fabrics, flowers, sofas… everything was sumptuous.

I really appreciated the kindness of the staff, which is the opposite of the “pinch and solemn” tone that is sometimes observed in other establishments of this rank. The team is young and dynamic and has the gift of assisting you without any exaggerations.

As you can imagine, we really enjoyed our stay at Lanesborough, and we strongly recommend this exceptional address.

Great addresses

Tamarind: one of the best Indian restaurants in London, wherein we had the chance to savour some of its delicacies for dinner. The cuisine is modern and creative, and the atmosphere was plush. You can get to this extraordinary location on foot from the hotel (just a 10-minute walk). Tamarind, 20 Queen Street, London W1J 5 PR.

Hamleys: a toy temple that will delight every child. Hamleys, 188-196 Regent Street, Soho, London W1B 5BT.

Diana Memorial Playground: a huge open-air playground where our son had a lot of fun in, and which was recommended to us by the Lanesborough concierge. Pirate ship, Indian tepees, water slides and swings, monkey bridge,… all games can be enjoyed free of charge. More than 1 million visitors visit this place every year. A must! Diana Memorial Playground, Kensington Gardens, London W2 2UH.
