A WEEK-END AT THE RUBENS AT THE PALACE HOTEL

Ann Daems

An, mother of 4, photographer, from Belgium

London had attracted us for a long time and we finally decided to make the trip with family. For this city trip, we chose to take the Eurostar from Lille, which is a quick and comfortable way to get to London. In the blink of an eye or so (1h20mins) we were in the centre of town. It’s very easy to find your way with the underground, “the tube” as the locals call it, from King’s Cross to the Rubens at the Palace hotel, located only a few steps away from Victoria Station. Get on board for urban life!

A tailored welcome for all ages

The lobby, illuminated by the Christmas lights was enough to dazzle us while plunging us into an atmosphere of rare elegance. Our little Matteo immediately ran to the beautiful Christmas tree. The benevolent welcome from the doorman and the reception only confirmed our first impressions!

Royal red colours present in the hall ways and the lobby that is both chic and warm, it underlines the enjoyable high-end comfort of the establishment.

We were immediately seduced by the neutral and soothing tones of the rooms. The bathrooms are fully equipped with bathrobes and slippers including mini versions for the children. I noticed with surprise the personal letter that the director of the hotel had specially addressed to our family: we were very touched by this welcome note.

While looking to find an activity for our little tribe, we discovered that the hotel possessed an Xbox, reserved for its little guests. What a surprise! Not having this type of entertainment at home, we could not refuse this treat to our children. On their scale it is complete luxury!

So many small attentions and big surprises were enough to make us feel like kings!

An ideal location, in the heart of London

Speaking of royal services, the hotel is very close to Buckingham Palace and Westminster, that is enough to feel doubly privileged! The Rubens at the Palace is ideally located to discover the city on foot, which is more than practical with four toddlers. Within 5 minutes we had arrived just in time to enjoy the famous changing of the guards. Like many other tourists, the children tried to make them laugh. In the end it is us who had a great laugh!

London is a surprising and vibrant city. Every street corner is a new discovery: the famous phone booths, the London Eye, Big Ben or even Piccadilly Circus were part of our program without losing time in public transport. The children were not left out. Feel free to check out the impressing M&M’s store, and the Lego shop or take them to see the dinosaur skeletons at the Natural History Museum: Breathtaking family experiences!

After having enjoyed the beautiful vibes of London life, we found ourselves back in the cosy comfort of the hotel.

Three restaurants for varied tastes

Completing the discovery of the city with a “gastronomic journey” was one of our greatest pleasures. For our dinner, we chose The Curry Room, one of the three restaurants of the hotel. A red setting (obviously) with its benches and dim lights to enjoy with the family the Indian flavours that London is well-known for. The helpful and attentive waiters offered paper, pencils and a small book so the kids could have fun between the dishes. A perfect alternative, while we savoured our glass of wine by candlelight.

After dinner, our youngest children were tempted by a game of Xbox, while my husband and I enjoyed a nightcap at the New York Bar with our two teenagers.

The opulent English Grill, another restaurant of the hotel, serves generous meat dishes cooked to perfection.

Thirdly, the Palace Lounge, overlooking the Royal Mews, is perfect to enjoy Afternoon Tea with the family – even serving a ‘Little Prince and Princess’ version for children.

One last thing, at breakfast, do not forget to try the Eggs Benedict, they are fabulous!

We were delighted by this London trip that was able to combine harmoniously the pleasures of city life with the tranquillity of our room, and of course our special family moments!
Thank you Little Guest for this wonderful time.

Tenderly,
An.
