Do you dream of a family safari? Headed for the wild plains of South Africa, in the province of Mpumlanga, where the splendid private reserve of Sir Richard Branson is to be found: Ulusaba Private Game Reserve.

Located in the western part of the Sabi Sands reserve, Ulusaba is also very close to the famous Kruger National Park and its 20,000 sq km (7722 sq mi) of protected fauna and flora.

From Johannesburg International Airport, it takes just 1 hour 20 minutes to reach the Ulusaba airstrip. From Nelspruit the flight will be 30 minutes, and 20 minutes will be enough from Skukuza.

Upon your arrival, a glass of ice-cold champagne will sound the beginning of your luxurious getaway in this land full of riches.

Imagine waking up on your balcony and seeing in the distance a giraffe, an elephant or a couple of lions. An ordinary morning in the heart of the African savanna …

Sir Richard Branson has mastered the art of finding exceptional places around the world, making them unique residences for family reunions. In 1994, he acquired the Ulusaba reserve and completely renovated its two lodges.

Ulusaba has conquered the hearts of travellers and, in 2016, was elected Best Resort of Africa by the very select classification of the Condé Nast Traveler Reader’s Choice Awards.

The two lodges have a total of 21 rooms. There is also a restaurant, a bar, a spa, 2 outdoor swimming pools, 2 tennis courts, a fitness centre, a shop, a car park, a library and a business center.

The interior decoration of the lodges blends savvy authenticity and refinement, with a strong style, with ethnic inspirations.

Ulusaba’s Rock Lodge dominates the top of a hill and offer their guests an exceptional view of the savanna. In the past, this high point was a great asset to the Shangaan warriors of the region, as it offered them a strategic position on their enemies. Ulusaba could mean “place where fear is less”. It was so high, the men felt invincible, and could withstand all dangers.

The Safari Lodge is located about 500m, down below, in the middle of lush vegetation. The rooms of the Safari Lodge are perched in the trees and connected by bridges allowing you to move closer to nature. For safety reasons, guests under the age of 12 cannot stay at the Safari Lodge. It should also be noted that children under 6 years of age cannot participate in the reservations.

Some of the rooms at Rock Lodge are ideal for family stays and guarantee comfort and privacy.

The Rock Suite consists of 2 bedrooms, a living area and can easily accommodate 1 couple and 2 children. The master bedroom has an en-suite bathroom and offers incredible views of the savannah. The second bedroom has a shower en suite.

The Makwela Suites. Each sumptuous suite has a private bathroom, a private terrace with infinity pool, and a separate living room and library / study. Each suite has a comfortable sofa bed, ideal for children.

In addition, close to Rock Lodge, the two Cliff Lodges are the ultimate in luxury and space. Cliff Lodge 1 can accommodate 3 adults and 2 children in its two bedrooms. With its fireplace, kitchen and bar, this lodge has everything from a small house. It even has a mini spa, a fitness area and a terrace with swimming pool. Cliff Lodge 2 is ideal for 2 adults and 2 children. It has a living room with fireplace and a swimming pool.

If you have a special occasion to celebrate, or if you are traveling in a group, there are many options to privatize the lodges and the resort. If you want to organize your wedding in Ulusaba, the whole team will make the most beautiful day of your life simply unforgettable.

Children from 0 to 11 years stay and eat FREE in Ulusaba!

As soon as they arrive, the little guests will be spoiled and will receive a backpack filled with a treasure. A personalized welcome letter will await each child in his room, in order to welcome him and to recall the few safety rules specific to life in the savanna.

At Ulusaba Cub’s Club, all children become “cubs”, in other words, real little adventurers. Educational programmes have been specially designed for children aged 0 to 5 years and those aged 6 to 11 years. At the Cub’s Club, everything is orchestrated according to the age and desires of each child.

In addition to the traditional treasure hunts and other activities, a wide selection of classic games (puzzles, cards, coloring books etc.) and electronic features (Wii, DVD etc.) are available for children.

Different courses are offered to have fun while learning. Cooking classes to make delicious cupcakes, but also courses to become perfect “Rangers”, learn more about nature and manage to identify the footprints of the many animals that wander around the lodges.

Traveling is synonymous with sharing and openness to others. This is why the programme encourages “cubs” to visit local community children and discover with them their favorite games and activities.

After a busy day, the children will enjoy a beautiful story, accompanied by a glass of milk and delicious cookies, before flying to the land of dreams.

The icing on the cake: the spa welcomes younger guests and offer treatments tailored to their needs.

This is only a brief overview of all the options available to aspiring explorers. The Ulusaba team still has many surprises for them!
In order to facilitate the stay of the families, many facilities for children and babies are available on site such as baby bottles, teats, baby cosmetics, baby phones, high chairs, adapted bathtubs, bottle warmers, and child / infant beds.

According to Branson: “The mere evocation of the African savannah awakens fascinating images of breathtaking nature, from sunrise safaris and a retreat away from the city…In Ulusaba, imagination becomes reality.”

A typical day in the reserve begins at 5:30am! This may seem early, but it’s worth it, as your effort may be rewarded with the opportunity to observe the Big Five (lions, elephants, buffaloes, leopards and rhinoceros) as closely as possible.

Children aged 6 years and older can accompany their parents on 4×4 game drives, younger cub’s are offered babysitting services and other activities, so parents can enjoy this incredible game viewing experience.

At nightfall, you can gaze at the stars at the observatory of the reserve, in the heart of the savanna. Your ‘Ranger’ will be delighted to teach you more about the many constellations visible in the African sky.

The resort creates magical excursions for its guests, rich in breathtaking panoramas.

To enjoy a different view of the area, take a helicopter ride. The ‘Canyons, Culture and Contrasts’ day takes you on a journey of discovery of different local cultures, including the Blyde River Canyon (the third largest canyon in the world), a series of waterfalls and the Rondavels (three impressive mountains, recalling the shape of the African huts). Enjoy your lunch in Graskop, in a restaurant serving the best pancakes in the area, as well as salads and other delicious snacks.

Sports fans will be happy to go and hit a ball on one of Ulusaba’s two tennis courts. Rackets and balls are at your disposal and your ‘Ranger’ will escort you to the courts to ensure that no unexpected or hairy host will disturb your game!

A journey is richer when smiles are shared. For the sake of sustainable development and collaboration with local communities, Ulusaba organizes many volunteer activities, in which you can take part. The ‘It’s Child’s Play’ programme will fill your heart with unforgettable memories. It allows you to slip into the shoes of a teacher and teach the children of the surrounding villages a subject that is close to your heart (from the alphabet to your favorite song … through your mother tongue).

Venture with your Ranger for the Safari Walk. This hiking trail will allow you to meet smaller animals, often hidden during the jeep trips.

A fitness room and a shop are available on site for your leisure time. In addition to local handicrafts you will find, in the shop, all essential sundries (toothpaste, sunscreen etc).

South Africa is certainly known for its safaris, but also for its wines. And the wine cellar is well stocked in Ulusaba! Whites, roses and reds await connoisseurs for a tasting at the Safari Lodge.

The two Aroma Boma spa cabins are ideal for letting your mind escape, while your body relaxes, for a massage.

A free babysitting service is provided by the lodge staff so that Dad and Mom can have a peaceful tete-a-tete.
