Check the kids' club calendar first. Many château kids' clubs only run during French school holidays (Easter, summer, October half-term, Christmas) rather than year-round. It's worth confirming before you book if the activities are the main draw.

Think beyond the château walls. The best family estates sit on 20+ hectares, which means moats to row across, forests to cycle through, farms to visit and, often, vineyards to wander... There's plenty to do even on a rainy afternoon indoors is rare, so pack for outdoor time.
